Therapy for Individuals

I work with individuals experiencing a range of difficulties in my private practice. Some of the work is short term (8/12/20 sessions) and some of it is open ended and long term. Either at the initial appointment or soon after, when we have agreed to work together, we will also agree how the work is going to proceed and the weekly day/time. We may decide that Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) will be part of the work in which case I will send you information about this psychotherapy technique to process overwhelming feelings.

I will give you a copy my Therapy Agreement & Guidance Notes so that you have a clear framework of my service terms especially in relation to holidays and cancellations.

What is the difference between Counselling and Psychotherapy?

It is not easy to define the difference between Counselling and Psychotherapy. They both have the aim to help a person feel better but Counselling can be short term and used to work on a specific difficulty whereas Psychotherapy is generally working at a deeper level for a longer period of time. ‘Psyche’ by definition refers to the deepest feelings, thoughts and beliefs a person has. For this reason psychotherapy can been seen as ‘soul’ work. It is in this longer term work that the relationship between therapist and client deepens and relating patterns can be explored.

As an Integrative Psychotherapist and Counsellor, I drawn on a range of theories but I also work in an embodied way: feelings are experienced in our bodies, our thoughts and beliefs can trigger particular sensations and emotions in our bodies. We cannot easily separate – nor it is helpful  – thoughts and feelings from our bodies.

The therapeutic relationship

It is important that you feel able to talk to your therapist openly and feel heard. It can take time to build this trust but having a time and place to talk things through in a way that often is not possible with friends or family can be transforming in itself. Being carefully and empathically listened to, without judgement, is the unique offering of therapy.
