About Therapy

In a psychotherapy or counselling session we sit (or walk) and talk (either in person or through video/telephone), something we do very often in our everyday lives. But therapy is different. I will listen and feel into your position, imagine your situation. Therapy happens when my empathic/compassionate responses are attuned and helpful to you, you feel understood, then we have is what is called a ‘therapeutic alliance’. The alliance helps you to open up to explore your experience more fully.

Depending upon what you are dealing with, you may need a lot of support in your therapy sessions. But therapy is not just about support. Change may require your thoughts and your emotional patterns to be gently challenged. Accepting the way things are is another part of therapy which can be deeply painful depending upon your problem.

Your thoughts, feelings, behaviours and body sensation/experience can all be brought into the therapy session.

I cannot work with everyone, nor will you feel you can work with any therapist. So it is important you feel comfortable with me. We can get a sense of each other – and whether I can help you – from an initial non-comittal appointment. Please note that my working hours are 10-6pm Monday to Friday.
